Dominican Adventure II

Dominican Adventure II

Continuing the Dominica Adventure must include it’s Culture and History.

When to Visit: Year-round is suitable, but February-April offers festivals and pleasant weather. Avoid peak hurricane season (August-October).

First of all should be a trip to the Kalinago Barana Autê Cultural Village: Located in the Kalinago Territory, offering a really deep dive into the culture of Dominica’s indigenous Kalinago people. You can experience traditional crafts, cooking, and performances, or just take one of the guided tours into the interior.

Try combining it with a visit to nearby Marigot or Calibishie, but avoid driving from Roseau due to the long, steep roads.
Tip: Closed shoes are recommended for the terrain.

Even a leisurely stroll through The Dominica Museum will offer more insights into the island’s colonial and indigenous history. Visit the local market on Fridays or Saturdays for the liveliest atmosphere.

Wander through the colourful streets of Roseau (Capital City): with its West Indian cottages, and visit the Old Market for great local produce, crafts, and souvenirs. St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, a Gothic-Romanesque landmark, is a highlight for architecture enthusiasts.

Beaches and Coastal Attractions

Relax on Mero Beach: this black-sand beach near Roseau, known for its laid-back vibe with reggae music, local food huts, and artisan stalls. Swim in the clear waters or sunbathe, but bring sandals as the sand gets hot. Bring local currency (XCD) for food and drinks, as amenities aren’t free. Tip: Water shoes are handy for the rocky areas.

Or

Batibou Beach: Another secluded black-sand beach ideal for a quiet escape. Perfect for picnics or photography, with fewer crowds than Mero. In order to access it may require a short walk, so check local directions.

If fishing is your thing, then Scotts Head: a fishing village on the southwest coast, known as a diving and snorkeling hub. There you can explore Scotts Head Pinnacle or hike for stunning views of Soufriere Bay.

Combine this with a visit to nearby Soufriere Sulphur Springs for a mix of adventure and relaxation, to end a wonderful adventure holiday.
