A Brief British History: London

Founded by the Romans, Londinium or London as it became, is the capital and largest city of the UK.   

Often considered as the world’s leading global city, it has been termed as the world’s most powerful, desirable, influential and most visited city.
Some say however, that it’s also the most expensive, others innovative and the most vegetarian friendly city in the world.

With such titles it’s a hard aspirations to live up to, but somehow it does.

Housing one of the largest financial centres of the world, making it he most-visited city (as measured by international arrivals), and by far the busiest city airport system (as measured by passenger traffic).

Its universities form the largest concentration of higher education institutes in the whole Europe.

And as for sporting activities, in 2012, it became the first city to have hosted three modern Summer Olympic Games..

No wonder for a period of nearly 100 years, it was the world’s most populous city, 1831 to 1925,

Containing four World Heritage Sites: 1) the Tower of London; 2) Kew Gardens; 3) the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret’s Church; and 4th, the historic settlement in Greenwich where the Royal Observatory, Greenwich defines the Prime Meridian, 0° longitude, and Greenwich Mean Time.

Having this much of a diverse range of people and cultures, said to include more than 300 languages spoken in the region. 

For tourists, the city is a treasure trove of nostalgic history and modernisation;

Must-see landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square and The Shard. London has numerous museums, galleries, libraries and sporting events. These include the British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, British Library and West End theatres. The London Underground, the oldest underground railway network in the world.
