From its military birth to 21^st century household application, its making the stand alone cooker less used. A brief History:

Flick back to 1944, inventor, William Maxson took his heavy egg-shaped kitchen appliance,

made of steel, weighing some 35 pounds. He put in a fan to help circulate the hot air around the food. He named it the Maxson Whirlwind Oven. Later he Partnered with the U.S Navy to prepare frozen meals on passenger planes, his “Sky Plate” cooked up to six meals at the same time.This early design he patented a few years later in `49`.

Fast forward 2005, Fred van der Weij, another inventor from the Netherlands, started developing his modern air fryer building on William Maxson’s invention. His design took three years to develop as a prototype, and this fryer, produced by Philips, was introduced to the public in 2010 at the IFA Berlin..

In the end, the main difference between a regular convection oven and an air fryer, is that the air fryer fan blows faster and the compartment in which food is cooked in is often (but not always) smaller.

All that hot air hitting food more rapidly than in a larger oven thus doesn’t lose as much oomph in transit. Most air fryers come with a grated rack or perforated basket, so the hot air can travel through and pummel the food from all sides.

Both cook food quickly, but an Air fryer is so much faster than just about any other type of convection oven, and most non-stick basket-style air fryers take no more than a minute or two to clean.
